It's Time for Summer and Summer Reading!

It is so hard to believe that school is now out for the summer.
The year went by so quickly!

I has just posted a summer reading recommendations list
and record form on the Library Webpage.

The library encourages students to read these books or any other books
they enjoy. Incoming seventh graders who read during the summer are
able to earn one extra credit point per book, up to 20 points, in their
language arts classes in September 2009. They should list the title and
author of each book on the summer reading form and get a parent
signature. Additionally, both seventh and eighth graders may take
AR quizzes on the books they read during the summer.

Please enjoy a great summer, rich with reading. I'd also like to
thank all of you for your great support of the library this year.

Book Fair and Author Visit

Lindero's annual book fair will take place in our library May 18-21. Our theme is "Summer Reading - Summer Fun." We will have great selections provided by our new vendor, Mrs. Nelson's Book Company. Please come shop for some great summer reading and enjoy the great selection. Book Fair hours:

Monday, May 18th - Wednesday, May 20th
8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Open House hours on Wednesday, May 20th
from 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Thursday, May 21st from 8:30 a.m - 1:30 p.m.

And, following our fair on May 27, we will be welcoming guest author Neal Shusterman. Students who have read one or more of his books will be invited to an assembly Period 1 or 2. Parents are invited to attend either of the assemblies. We will also have smaller workshops later in the day for students who have read several of his books, and there will be a book signing for everyone who purchased one of his books. Copies of his books will be available at the book fair.

Neal Shusterman Author Visit

The Lindero Library and Language Department are very excited to announce that − thanks to generous funding from the Lindero PFC − Lindero will be hosting award-winning author Neal Shusterman on May 27, 2009. Mr. Shusterman has written many popular books for young people, including the 2008 California Young Reader Medal winner, The Schwa Was Here. Hearing and meeting an author is a very motivating experience for students. To attend an assembly or workshop with Mr. Shusterman, students need to read and pass an Accelerated Reader quiz on one or more of his books.

We encourage you to purchase one or more of his books. All students who purchase books will be invited to a book signing with Mr. Shusterman on May 27. We have arranged with Mrs. Nelson’s Book Company, this year’s Book Fair vendor, to order some of his titles for our students, and your purchase will also be credited to our PFC Book Fair profits that benefit the library. If you are interested in ordering any books, please complete the book order form as soon as possible so that your child will have ample time to read before Mr. Shusterman’s visit. Students who return their orders to the library by Friday, February 13 will receive their books in the first order shipment.

Students are invited to come to the library during both lunches on Wednesday to hear Mrs. Lofton do book talks on Shusterman's different books to help them decide on titles to order and read.

Huntington Field Trip

The Library will be hosting our second field trip to the Huntington Library on Tuesday, February 10. Students who attended the first trip on February 3 were treated to a wonderful docent-led workshop in the rare books and manuscripts gallery. We then enjoyed some of the grounds. We will repeat this trip for another group of top readers February 10.

Students are invited to the library during lunch this Wednesday to hear book talks about Neal Shusterman's books to help them decide what they would like to read in preparation for our Shusterman author visit on May 27.

The Library Book Club will meet during lunch on Friday.

Lindero Out Loud

The Library will host Lindero Out Loud, with guest reader Mrs. Blumfield reading about vampires, Friday, February 6, during 6th/7th grade lunch.

The library hosted a great field trip to the Huntington Library for top readers on Tuesday, February 3. We will have a repeat visit for other top readers on February 10.

Inauguration

The library will be open before school on Tuesday, January 20, starting at 8:15 A.M. to allow students to watch Inaugural events. We will not be doing book checkouts or Accelerated Reader quizzes so that everyone can watch the Inaugural events. We will be open for regular library activities the rest of the day, including both lunches and after school.

Jennifer Anne Kogler Visit

Author Jennifer Anne Kogler will be visiting Lindero this Friday, December 12. She will speak at three assemblies, Periods 1, 2, and 3. After that, she will be signing books in the library during Period 4, starting at 12 Noon. All students who requested to attend an assembly should be on the list for Period 1, 2, or 3. The assembly lists are posted in language arts classes and in the library. Please see me as soon as possible if you have any questions or think you should be on the list but aren't. If you purchased a copy of The Otherworldlies, be sure to bring it on Friday to get it signed. We will send out notes to all students who purchased books with their book signing times. If you haven't yet purchased a book, we still have a few copies. We may also have copies to sell during lunch on the day of the event. Our copies are directly from Miss Kogler, and for sale for the reduced price of $10. Make checks payable to "Jennifer Anne Kogler."

Twilight Discussion for Eighth Graders

The first Twilight event for eighth graders had a great turnout! Check out the article about it in The Acorn. We will have a Twilight book discussion during eighth grade lunch on Wednesday, November 19.

The book club will meet next on Friday, December 5.

On December 12, we have an exciting event planned: an author visit with young author Jennifer Anne Kogler. Please check out the flyer for all the information.

Library Twilight Event and Book Club Friday

This Friday, November 7, the Library will host a Twilight Book Club for 8th graders during lunch. We will play a Jeopardy Trivia game and have prizes. Please come by the library to sign up. After this Friday, we will meet twice again, once before the movie comes out to discuss the books, and again shortly after the movie release to compare the book and movie.

The 6th/7th grade book club will also meet on Friday. We will have book talks and a special announcement. Please let me know if you want to do a book talk.

I hope that all of you who came enjoyed the great Lindero Out Loud reading of Witches by Miss Collins. Our next Lindero Out Loud will be on Friday, November 14.

Catching Up Again

Oh dear! I've gotten behind on this blog again! Please forgive me. Here's what's coming up this week at the library:

For parents --- Please plan to stay after the PFC meeting on Tuesday morning (Oct. 21) for a library parent education session. I will fill you in on the library's print and online resources. You will learn how to take advantage of the "virtual library" online to access the school library catalog, Accelerated Reader information, quality research links, and other valuable information sources to help your children succeed with their reading and school work. This session will take place immediately after the PFC meeting in the library.
Lindero Out Loud -- will meet in the library on Friday (Oct. 24) during 6th/7th grade lunch. Miss Collins will get us ready for Halloween by reading scary stories. Space is limited and is first come, first serve. Come by the library to sign up and get a raffle prize ticket.
The L.A. County Library is holding a bookmark contest, and we have forms for it our library. The deadline to submit them to the County Library is October 23. Turn them in at our library by October 22, and we will make them into bookmarks and take them to the County Library for you.

Lindero Out Loud Meets Friday

The library will host the first "Lindero Out Loud" during 6th/7th grade lunch this Friday. All 6th and 7th graders are invited to come spend lunch in the library and hear our guest reader, Mrs. Firestone, do a great read aloud. We will have a raffle drawing after the reading. To attend, come by the library to sign up and get a ticket.

First Book Club Meeting Friday

Sixth and seventh graders are invited to the first meeting of our library book club on Friday during lunch. We will play a "get acquainted" book game, talk about book club plans, and have raffle prizes. All sixth and seventh graders are invited.

The library has now completed all sixth grade orientations, and students are coming to the library for independent visits before school, during lunch, and after school.

The library will be closed before school on Tuesday due to a staff meeting and will be open before school Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week.
The library will be open for 6th/7th grade lunch Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
The library book club will have its first meeting in the library during 6th/7th grade lunch on Friday.
The library will be open every day after school this week.

News Update

All seventh and eighth graders visited the library Sept. 2 and 3 to check out books, and we began sixth grade orientations on Sept. 4. Each sixth grade class visits for two periods to learn about the library and then check out books. All sixth graders will have visited by September 12. We plan to also be open before school (at 8:15 A.M.), lunch, after school (until 3:45 P.M.), and for Accelerated Reader quizzes after school on Wednesday, Sept. 10. If you are a new seventh or eighth grader, please be sure to watch the online library orientation to learn all about how the library and our Accelerated Reader program work. Parents are also welcome to watch the orientation for more information about the library.

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year. I look forward to seeing all Lindero's students in the library often this year for reading, research, and exciting programs.

This year, the library will be in new temporary quarters. Due to the move, we have a lot to do to get it organized before we can open. I will keep you posted here of the exact date we are able to open. In the meantime, please take advantage of our brand new library webpage for ideas for reading, to access our computer catalog, and learn more about the library. If you have bookmarked our old library page, please change your bookmark to our new site, since I will no longer be updated the old site.

Since I am not sure whether the library telephone will be working the first week of school, you can email if you have any questions.

Summer Reading

As the long, hot days of summer stretch before us, please take some leisure time to enrich your summer with great reading. Incoming seventh graders who read during the summer will earn one point per book (up to 20 points) for extra credit in their language arts classes in September. Both seventh and eighth graders may also take Accelerated Reader quizzes on these books. Use the Summer Reading form to keep track of your reading.

For some reading ideas, please check the library's 2008 Summer Reading Recommendations. You certainly aren't limited to these books; they are just some of the books I have read myself and enjoyed or for which I have heard great recommendations.There are also more reading ideas on the Lindero Library web page (check the "More Links to Great Books" link) as well as a searchable version of the Accelerated Reader list that also enables you to view summaries of each book.

If you have any questions about reading or the library over the summer, do feel free to contact me by email. I will respond to all queries within a few days.

Last Regular Library Week

Sadly, the Lindero Library must close for the school year on Friday, June 6. Please be sure to finish and return all your books and take all your AR quizzes by that date. After June 6, please take advantage of your public library for great reading options over the summer.

Before school ends, I will post a list of suggested summer reading ideas on the Lindero Library website. Please plan to do lots of reading over the summer! Incoming seventh graders can get extra credit in their language arts classes for summer reading, and both incoming seventh and eighth graders can take AR quizzes on their summer reading books in the fall.

The book fair is now over at the Lindero Library, so we are get back to normal library business. Don't forget, though, that you can still shop at Barnes & Noble with one of our coupons (or just tell them it is a Lindero Book Fair purchase) through Monday.

Book Fair This Week!

The library had a wonderful author event with our terrific guest author, Lisa Yee, last week. All the students who attended the assembly, workshops, and book signing gave her rave reviews. Many thanks to our PFC for funding this great experience for our students.

This week, the library is morphing into a Barnes & Noble book store as we enjoy our great annual book fair. We have a large, customized selection provided by our local Barnes & Noble in the Promenade. The book fair will be open at Lindero Monday - Thursday. We open at 8:30 A.M. before school, and remain open until 3:30 P.M. We will also be open during Open House night from 6:30 - 9 P.M. The book fair will continue at Lindero until Thursday at 1 P.M. In addition to buying great books for yourself, consider purchasing gifts and items from teachers' classroom wish lists.

You can also shop at Barnes & Noble in the Promenade any time until May 26, and your purchases will count towards our book fair profits. Be sure to take a flyer or tell the cashier it is Lindero book fair purchase. In fact, you can shop at any Barnes & Noble, if you give the cashier our book fair number: 286062. All the profits from the book fair support our library program.

Library News May 7

The Lindero Library is pleased to have completed installation of our new library catalog software. The catalog is now available online from anywhere on campus at Lindero. We hope to have it available off-site very soon. Please check it out while you are in the library or anywhere on campus!

We are looking forward to our author visit with Lisa Yee on Wednesday, May 14. Students who read one of her books will be receiving an invitation to the assembly in the gym during Period 2. We also invite all Lindero parents to the assembly. Students who read two or more books are invited to a workshop during Period 3 or Period 6. Students who purchased one of her books are invited to the booksigning during Period 7.

Library Installing New Software!

All the LVUSD libraries are installing new catalog and circulation software next week (April 21-25). This software will make our user catalog accessible online from any computer with Internet access. It will also have a new, state-of-the-art user interface. We do need some time to get it installed and ready, so please plan ahead for the time we will be closed:

Be sure to check out plenty of books to read on or before Friday, April 18.
Be sure to borrow any research materials you need on or before Friday, April 18.
Take any Accelerated Reader quizzes for books you have finished on or before Friday, April.

Have you been playing "How Well Do You Know Your World?" If you have, and you got a good score, print out your score page or send a screen print of it to Mrs. Lofton at the library. The top student and top staff member will win a prize.
March 31, the day we return from Spring Break, is the last day to vote for the California Young Reader Medal nominated books. Please don't forget!
Be sure to read a book by Lisa Yee in preparation for her visit on May 14. All students who read one of her books and complete the AR quiz on it by May 1 will be invited to the assembly. Teen Tech Week

March 2-8 is the American Library Association's Teen Tech Week. The Lindero Library invites you to celebrate by visiting the Lindero Library Webpage, listening to an oral booktalk voicethread (click on the booktalks link), respond to the fun book characters survey, and scroll down to the bottom of the page to play "How Well Do You Know Your World" and practice your geography skills. The library will award a prize to the top points earner. To enter your score, take a screenshot of the screen with your final score (click Alt+PrintScrn) and paste it in an email to Mrs. Lofton. Have fun playing!

Some things to remember:

There is just one month left (until March 31) to complete reading, quizzing, and voting for the California Young Reader Medal nominated books.

Ms. Yee has written four popular award-winning books for young people. Congratulations to Lindero's top five schoolwide Accelerated Reader stars for the month of November. These students, along with the September and October winners, are featured in individual READ posters in the library and their Language Arts classrooms, and in a group READ poster on the library slideshow at the top of the Library webpage.

We also congratulate Lindero's Classroom Accelerated Reader Stars for Sept.-Nov. Three times this school year, we will recognize the top AR readers in each Language Arts Class. One student in each class will be recognized for earning the most points during a three-month period, and another will be recognized for passing the most quizzes during that period. The list of student achievers is posted in the library and each Language Arts classroom.

Thanks to all the students who contributed posters to the book poster contest. We will announce the winners this week and get all the entries on display in the library very soon.

Change of focus for blog

When I created this blog in Spring 2007, it was my first experience trying a blog, and I thought I would use it for all sorts of information related to the library - news, book talks, library opening hours information, and so on. Well, I've just decided to try a different approach to disseminating this information. I'm going to separate news, hours, and book talks into three separate sources. This blog will focus just on news about the library and books. For library hours (that is, when the library is open before school, lunch, and after school), see the new Google-based Library Hours Calender. There is also a link to it on the Lindero Library web page. For book talks, check out the brand new Lindero Loves Books blog.

While I realize this means going to multiple links for library-related information, it will also allow you to select the link that works best for you.

On Friday, November 9, all Language Arts classes will have discussions of Esperanza Rising. In addition, students who read the book will be invited to a special event during RAD. The deadline for reading the book and taking the AR quiz and for submitting contest entries is Monday, November 5.

This week is National Teen Read Week, and the theme is LOL @ Your Library. Come celebrate at the Lindero Library by checking out a funny book (or any book) and entering the Teen Read Week contest. Get a Teen Read Week entry form, and answer just four easy questions. All students who complete the entry forms will receive a special Teen Read Week bookmark, and be entered in a drawing to be featured in a READ poster. Sixth and Seventh graders can also celebrate Teen Read Week by attending Lindero Out Loud at the Lindero Library during lunch on Friday. Stop by the library to sign up and get a ticket.

Don't forget to participate in the City of Agoura's One City, One Book program by reading Esperanza Rising and entering the poetry/reflection contest and/or the doll making/figure contest.

During the opening days of school, the Lindero Library was open for Language Arts Class visits and orientations for all sixth graders, and students were able to check out books when they visited with their classes. We are now also open with full services before school, after school, and during lunch periods, and students can now take Accelerated Reader quizzes. The library opens at 8:15 A.M. each morning and closes at 3:45 P.M. each afternoon. Please check back with this blog regularly for notification of the few occasions when the library may be closed before or after school for meetings or (during lunch periods) due to class visits.

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year! I hope to see all of you a lot in the library this year! Starting today, students will begin coming in the library with their Language Arts classes to check out books. Sixth grade classes will also have orientations to the library and our Accelerated Reading program. After we complete the orientations, the library will begin opening before school, at lunch, and after school on September 11. Students will also be able to start taking Accelerated Reader quizzes on September 11.

We have lots of fun programs at the library. One that we will be participating in this fall is the City of Agoura's "One City, One Book" program. The middle school level book is Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This not-to-be-missed book recounts a tale of a young girl, born to luxury in Mexico, who, due to a sudden reversal of fortune, must learn to adapt to the life of a farm worker in California's Central Valley during the days of the Great Depression. Please get a copy from our library, the public library, or your bookstore and participate in reading it. We will be announcing activities related to "One City, One Book" soon.

In early September, we will begin meetings of our library book club, and we will also inaugurate "Lindero Out Loud," a series of lunch-time read alouds in the library. Stay tuned for more information soon!

Summer and Harry Potter

If you have been checking this blog this summer, I guess you have seen that it has gone on vacation. I'll resume regular posts when school begins again. I hope everyone is enjoying summer and has been reading :).

If, like me, you recently finished and loved Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and are now feeling a little let down as to what to read next, don't despair. Cick here for some ideas. And, if you have ideas of your own, please email me and I'll add them to the list.

Oh, and in case you are wondering about taking the AR quiz for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows rest assured that it will be added to the AR list as soon as we return in to school. It will be 34 points.

Wendelin van Draanen Visits Lindero May 14

Lindero welcomes award-winning author Wendelin Van Draanen on Monday, May 14. She will be speaking at an assembly at 9 A.M., and will hold three small group workshops during periods 2, 3, and 5. During periods 6 and 7, she will sign copies of her books. Parents are welcome to join us at the assembly in the gym at 9 A.M.

The library will be closed on Monday while we host this special event. The library will resume normal hours, opening at 8:15 AM and closing at 3:45 PM, on Tuesday.

Life has been miserable in foster homes for Holly since her mother died. Ms. Leone, her teacher, gives her a blank journal in which to record her thoughts in hopes that it can help her cope with life. Lindero is very fortunate to be hosting author Wendelin van Draanen on May 14, 2007. Ms. van Draanen has written many popular award-winning books for young people. Hearing and meeting an author is a very motivating experience for students, and we hope you will want to take advantage of this opportunity. In order to attend an assembly with Ms. van Draanen, students need to read and successfully complete an Accelerated Reader quiz on one or more of her books. Students who read more than one will also be entered in a lottery to attend a smaller event with the author.

The Lindero Library has some of Ms. van Draanen's books for circulation but not enough to serve our entire student population. We encourage you to purchase one or more of her books. All students who purchase books will be invited to a book signing with Ms. van Draanen on May 14. We have arranged with Barnes & Noble to order copies of her books for our students, and your purchase will also be credited to our PFC Book Fair profits that benefit the library. If you are interested in ordering books, please complete an order form as soon as possible so that you will have ample time to read before Ms. van Draanen’s visit.
